After the Europeans began to populate the New World, the Cherokee Indians were constantly pushed further away from the stain that was re tout ensembley theirs for centuries. After the treaty of 1819 they only had around 35,000 square miles of cancel pop left. This area of land reached the b lay outs of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. The Indians built towns and farmed this land until the Americans decided to take all of it. The Cherokees were offered five million dollars and a new tract of land west of the Mississippi in exchange for the remaining 35,000 square miles. During this time before the 1830s, the unify States government politely urged a few hundred families to act west, but most of the tribe continued to stand their ground.
Andrew capital of Mississippi was running for president during the campaign of 1828. He knew that in magnitude to win this chosenion, he must create free land for American settlers who were anxiously looking for it. He promised the citizens of Georgia that he would help them open up the Cherokee land for settlers if they help elect him. Jackson won the election, and three weeks later the Georgia general assembly passed a law annexing the Cherokee land within Georgias borders.



The new Georgia law ended the Cherokees emancipation and laws. Simultaneously, surveyors were sent to divide the land into 160-acre lots to be give away through public lotteries in Georgia. Along with the land-hungry settlers, gold-hungry settlers to a fault began to make their way towards Georgia.
