Growing up along the Atlantic Ocean in the Port City of Buchanan on the West Coast of Africa, the sight of vessels calling at the bearing was not only an admirable center of attraction during my childhood but also a kind of puzzle. Questions about sailplaning of ships, architectural design, materials used for construction, and tasks performed by individuals aboard lingered my mind on many occasions. Later I came to understand that modern ships are fabricated from variety of materials including steel and aluminum. I also recognise that workers are onboard for navigational and maintenance purposes. In addition, I occupy that over ninety percent of the world cargos are transported by different vessels which are paramount to international trade. It was amazing to lieu some of the vessels at the Port of Buchanan located on the brink of Liberia loading and discharging cargoes. Another attraction was the trains that delivered goods to and from the vessels. From the piercing note of a horn, to the roar of the diesel engine to the click-clack of the wheels on the joints in the rail off to the squeal of steel wheel on steel rail, there were hundreds of sounds to be heard daily.
Indeed these were sounds of global trade a trade that has imparted the lives of millions.
My desire to be part of the global path of transport began bearing fruits when I was privileged to assume been selected as a kid to board one of the tugboats every sunlight to get a hands-on experience on the ledger entry and exist of vessels.
