Many people would say that Reading, Pennsylvania is, in its current state, not the best place to be. What most of us fails to remember is the once thriving town that it was? When you take a look at the city today it is hard to cipher the bustling of people at the train station on S. Seventh St. or the sound of barges going up and fine-tune the river. Although, many people still believe, that despite being the poorest city in the United States Reading is still very mystifying in its culture, history, and diversity.
Reading, Pa being the two hundred 70 two years old that it is has multiple cultural backgrounds. sooner the city was settled by the Swiss back in 1704; although, the city is more widely known for its Polish and German immigrants. These hard workings immigrants were the backbone of the city, and they worked the factory jobs that used to be abundant in this city.



Reading, even back then, was a cross for many travelers, for in those days we had the barges on the Schuylkill River: with the prosperous convert of goods up and down the river, the Reading Railroad, yes like the one on the Monopoly board: was booming with passengers eager to start somew here fresh, exclusively this combined gave Reading its multi-cultural background.
The history of Reading is quite amazing considering the current plight of the poverty stricken city. Back in the 1950s, there was no problems getting employment, jobs were plentiful right here in our city. There was no need to stress unemployment, housing, nor figure out where your next meal was coming from. Reading was the myopic city in the valley that had more than enough jobs for its residents. A person had their choice of employment ranging from factory work to working in the lush hotels up in the Mount Penn Mountains, where the tight went to get away.
